Free filet block – Mountain Glen from TTJH

This is the second instalment in tutorials and special stitches to my wool-hungry shawl project, The Train Journey Home.

I hope that adding photos and tutorials as I go along will spur me on towards that finish line, and that the full pattern will be available via Ravelry.com before too long.

The shawl features a variety of windows, echoing some of the incredible scenery from the train from Glasgow to Oban. Oban is in Argyll, on the west coast of Scotland, as famous for being the gateway to the Wester Isles, Glencoe and the Highlands, but also for the abundance of lochs and glens too.

Mountain Glen is a 4 row block, which features the gentles slopes and towering mountains of the region.

Row 1. Treble Crochet across (5 stitches)

Row 2. TC, CH1, DC in next 3 stitches, CH1, TC

Row 3. TC, CH2, Mountain stitch CH2, TC

Row 4. TC across, including one in either side of the mountain and one in the top of the mountain. (5 stitches)

Mountain stitch – YO twice, insert hook into next stitch, (YO and pull through a loop, YO and pull through 2 loops on hook) 3 times, YO and pull through ALL remaining loops.

This is a…. drumroll please… “Short Double Treble 3 Together” because instead of pulling through the loops left on the hook in stages, you just do it all in one. It seems overly complicated, but it gives a lovely point at the top and really steep sides. Just what you want for the crochet version of Ben Cruachan!
